American exceptionalism...
When hiking in the wilderness becomes about the community and races .

yike. I’m not white so I do feel a bit of what she describes. But it’s so much less than if I were
black.

Was a tough read, and it should have been.
I look forward to a day when this in not always in the backs of the minds of people of color when they venture into unfamiliar territory...

Have you ever viewed the Gadsden flag as having racist undertones? If flown with the Confederate flag, sure, but by itself, I really don’t think so.

We re I a minority I think I’d view it as neutral at best. A lot of overlap between people who are deeply suspicious of the federal government and those who are unsympathetic towards modern civil rights causes.

Should be required reading. Thanks for sharing this.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think of the Gadsden as racist in and of itself.
But I suspect that those who fly it are far more likely to be racist.

Plenty of liberal racists, too, fwiw...
I just see the Gadsden flag as an “individual liberty” symbol, maybe most closely linked in current time to 2nd amendment folks, but on Wikipedia you’ll read that LGBT groups have used a version before, too.

Sure, but plenty of racist “patriots” fly the American flag as well...
I feel like, at this point (or ever, really), could you disconnect the Confederate flag from slavery/racism, but the Gadsden flag is really about individual liberty (whatever ones you care about the most). I read on Wikipedia that an LGBT group actually used a variation in the past.

Oh absolutely! Racism is EVERYWHERE.
It’s just that I tend to think there’s a lot of overlap between Gadsden flyers and far right extremists. The flag itself and the ideas originally behind it seem inoffensive to me.

Yes, the overlap is definitely there, I just think we need to be careful projecting those ideas onto someone just because the overlap exists.

You are correct. It’s a tough battle, because it’s human nature to stereotype. I think it’s something we all have to work hard to overcome. And I'm not excluding myself from that.

As a funny aside, I saw a Gadsden flag license plate on an effing TOYOTA HIGHLANDER this morning. Was all blacked out with bigger tires and a roof rack, but yeah, still a Highlander.

Lol. To be fair, around the burbs of Chicago where I'm at, it’s VERY rare to see a Gadsden on a car. I can only recall 1-2x in the last 6 months. They were on nondescript cars, too, not lifted coal rollers.

And did you immediately think “RACIST!”, or something a little more nuanced?
It’s not super common here in Tulsa, but clearly more common than up there.

No, more like Tea Party. Racist wouldn't be in the top 5 of things I think.

Yes, libertarian =/= racist.
